The Tri-Hards Community Fitness Project: Empowering Exmouth Since 2017

Founded in 2017 by the inspiring Shelly, The Tri-Hards Community Fitness Project began as a grassroots initiative aimed at encouraging local women to get active, connect, and support one another through movement. What started with a few group runs soon grew into a thriving, self-sustaining fitness community that continues to support the health and wellbeing of Exmouth and the surrounding areas.

In 2019, Shelly’s husband Neal came on board to help launch the men's side of the project, expanding Tri-Hards into a truly inclusive and welcoming space for all. Since then, the group has grown far beyond its original scope. With dozens of events happening each week at various times, members can now take part in a wide range of activities including running, cycling, swimming lessons, experience days, active weekends away, and even coffee mornings and events outside of Devon.

What sets Tri-Hards apart is the strength of its community. It’s entirely self-run by passionate members who organise and lead sessions, cheer each other on, and create opportunities for people to step outside their comfort zones. Over the years, countless individuals have achieved things they never thought possible — whether it’s completing their first 5K or conquering a triathlon.

Tri-Hards has also made a huge impact beyond fitness. Through hosting events and challenges, the community has raised over £40,000 for local charities — a contribution Shelly is incredibly proud of.

In 2022, after five phenomenal years at the helm, Shelly stepped down and passed the baton to a team of dedicated directors, all of whom are longstanding Tri-Hards members. While she remains a passionate supporter of the group, Shelly now channels her energy into running a successful canicross club — yet another example of her commitment to making movement fun and accessible.

Tri-Hards is more than just a fitness group — it’s a movement. A celebration of community, resilience, and the power of people coming together to become friends and live healthier, happier lives.
